In
a geographic area where state-of-the-art home theater systems are not at
all unusual, a church’s audio equipment has to sound great. So when
Oak Brook Community Church decided to upgrade their system, audio high
fidelity was critical.
The
equipment had to be user-friendly (for a largely volunteer staff),
durable, and perform well in a less than acoustically friendly space.
The rectangular shaped sanctuary seats 650 members. In addition to the
large room space, stone walls and a very high ceiling created an echo
challenge.
The
system also had to perform equally well for both spoken word and music,
including contemporary live sound and multimedia. Two services, both
heavily musical, are held on Sunday. During the week, a much quieter service is held. So the sound
system had to meet the needs of a variety of applications.
Fine
Arts Pastor, Dan Martinson worked with Brookdale Music, in Naperville,
to select and design the audio system. Two MacPherson IS12 loudspeakers
and a pair of LFE subwoofers were selected, powered by two QSC Audio
PLX-3002 power amps. The
configuration is left-right with the IS12s flown 12 feet above the stage
and the LFEs at stage level directly below. An FOH Soundcraft K2
48-channel console fills out the system.
With
Martinson leading an in-house crew, the equipment was installed in six
days. Tim Gavin, Brookdale product specialist, then came in and trained
the volunteer technical staff.
Aesthetically
and musically, the revamp has been a success.
"I
have been extremely impressed by the high quality of the MacPherson
speakers. They are small, so the speakers themselves were easy to install
in a space where visual qualities are so important. However, they produce such an incredibly pure sound with no
distortion and nearly perfect coverage."
